Travelling - Thursday 14

A 4.30am alarm is not the best way to start a long day of travelling! On the hopper bus by 5.15am and everything smooth at Heathrow. Flight leaves 5mins early and so at 7.40am we put our watches back to 1.40am! Great flight. Arrived Chicago 10.10am.
Arrived Phoenix at about 3.30pm, having put our watches back another two hours. Trying not to think what the time REALLY is as we’re nowhere near our hotel yet! American airports as efficient as ever as we’ve not got any immigration to go through. Just land, pick up the bag and go! Off site car rental pick up was not good. About a 20 minute drive. After paperwork, rental guy just said, “ Medium SUV’s are middle row, take whatever one you want”! We took a black Ford Escape, second car we loaded as the first was dirty up front after we’d loaded the luggage!

We then hit Pheonix rush hour on the  Interstate 17 North at about 4.45pm and didn’t hit Flagstaff, 150 miles away until just before dark at about 7.00pm. Road was mostly absolutely straight! Just passed one other town of note! Interesting ride, and got prettier as we progressed, steadily rising to 5000ft.

By the time we hit Flagstaff the scenery was alpine, very pretty! Booked into the hotel. It looked like an alpine skiing lodge, very rustic, much nicer than the website photos. We had a large King Suite, very nice indeed! No unpacking, into the restaurant, two buds a small meal and back to the room. A bath and bed  by 8.50pm…… looking back now it was about 24hrs of travel. We were tired!
